Review by Nancy Henshaw
This book is fun and easy to read and the author clearly enjoyed writing it. At the same time it is tremendously informative and the underlying work and research is formidable. It is hard to imagine it becoming dated. Della Galton has gone right back to basics for the would-be writer. Her style is friendly and the layout undaunting to a beginner, with plenty of gentle humour. She has also managed to include everything needed to refresh a successful writer. Her “Tips from the experts” are a valuable addition to this attractive book. One of these provided a hint that would never have occurred to me. The quotations from her own and other writers’ stories range from the poignant to the hilarious, all equally illuminating. The “how not to do it” examples – specially invented by Della – are a hoot.
One final thought: if you like fiction but know you would never want to write, just dipping into ‘How to Write and Sell Short Stories’ is sure to add to your enjoyment of the stories you read.
